 Click on picture for larger image Californians are very familiar with this contraption, the seismograph. After every earthquake there is always a shot of a seismograph with a talking head from someone at Cal Tech in Pasadena. Well, now I've got my own picture of one! A Seismograph is basically a roll of paper with a pen suspended above it, and it records movement. Thankfully, nothing more than these little lines here in So Cal for a while. I doubt I will take a picture of the "big one." No, I hope to be visiting family in Indiana when that one occurs. Now if we could only predict it so I can make the travel arrangements.... Neat you have a photo of that. I only remember feeling one decent shake while I lived in San Diego... I know there were others but I didn't notice them. I just prayed one big one didn't hit as I would drive over the Coronado bridge! =) Actually, I felt a pretty large one here in TN but that was over 20 years ago.

One of my worst fears, a big one. Living in the Philippines, where we are in what is called the Pacific Ring of Fire, we do have these in small doses although I have experienced several big ones too. Scary.

The composition of this photograph makes the seismograph seem less a contraption and more a piece of art. I really enjoy how you shot this.

A bit of Catholic trivia. You may be interested to know that seismology was long regarded as a Jesuit science. The Jesuits dominated this science for decades. In fact, a local Jesuit university (John Carroll) has (had) a seismograph on campus here in Cleveland!
