Folks, this election we have the chance to stand up to the forces of evil championed by Barak Obama. This is your opportunity to stand up for what is right. Don’t sit this one out, and whatever you do - don’t support this evil for some tertiary reason. Nothing discussed this year comes close to trumping this issue.

This time, Roe vs. Wade really could hang in the balance - Los Angeles Times

Through most of the 1990s and until recently, the Supreme Court had a solid 6-3 majority in favor of upholding the right of a woman to choose abortion. But the margin has shrunk to one, now that Justice Sandra Day O’Connor is retired and has been replaced by Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr.

And Justice John Paul Stevens, a leader of the narrow majority for abortion rights, is 88.

“Clearly, Roe is on the line this time,” said Indiana University law professor Dawn Johnsen, a former lawyer for NARAL Pro-Choice America. “It is quite clear they have four votes against it. If the next president appoints one more, the odds are it will be overruled.”

Anyone notice the bias in this liberal rag. If properly written, it would readn “…a solid 6-3 majority in favor of denying an unborn infants right to life….” or, if more even handed, “in favor of legalizing abortion.” In spite of the typical slant, the basic premise of the article is correct - this election will be consequential for this issue. The next president may appoint up to three judges - all from the liberal side of the court. This would change everything.

Anyone who votes for Barack Obama is explicitly voting for a continuation of the legalization of the greatest holocaust we have ever witnessed. If Barack Hussein Obama is elected president, not only will he sign the FOCA - which wipes away every restriction on abortion, he will guarantee a pro-abortion supreme court. This issue is larger than the war, the economy, and healthcare combined. This is akin to the struggle against slavery - an entire group of human beings are being denied fundamental human rights and a court has declared that they may be murdered with impunity. It is our duty to place the restoration of those rights as our highest priority.

Make no mistake, this is the human rights crisis of our day. Do not sit idly by while our fellow human beings are slaughtered by the millions - one inocent life at a time.

St. Michael is the patron saint for our family, so we celebrate this feast day in a special way. September 29th was traditionally known as Michaelmas and was a holy day of obligation until the 18th century. The Church added to the feast day the other two Archangels named in the bible. St. Gabriel’s feast used to be March 24 and St. Raphael used to be October 24. Perhaps the Church will separate the feasts again in the future. I for one, would like to celebrate each on their own.

Archangel Prayers

St. Michael the Archangel defend us in battle. Be our protection against the snares and wickedness of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do Thou, O prince of the heavenly host - by the Divine Power of God - cast into hell, Satan and all evil spirits who wander this world seeking the ruin of souls.
Amen.

O Blessed Archangel Gabriel, we beseech thee, do thou intercede for us at the throne of divine Mercy in our present necessities, that as thou didst announce to Mary the mystery of the Incarnation, so through thy prayers and patronage in heaven we may obtain the benefits of the same, and sing the praise of God forever in the land of the living.
Amen.

Glorious Archangel St. Raphael, great prince of the heavenly court, you are illustrious for your gifts of wisdom and grace. You are a guide of those who journey by land or sea or air, consoler of the afflicted, and refuge of sinners. I beg you, assist me in all my needs and in all the sufferings of this life, as once you helped the young Tobias on his travels. Because you are the “medicine of God,” I humbly pray you to heal the many infirmities of my soul and the ills that afflict my body. I especially ask of you the favor (name your request) and the great grace of purity to prepare me to be the temple of the Holy Ghost.
Amen.

O God, send the Archangels Michael, Gabriel, & Raphael to our assistance. May they who stand forever praising You at Your throne present our humble petitions before You. May they be our safeguard in times of trouble and temptation. May they defend our country from attack. May they tirelessly work to end abortion and all the sins against life in the world. May these powerful angels help to assure the leaders of our country follow You first in all things. And may they help to strengthen our Holy Catholic Church and draw others to this vessel of the Way and the Truth and the Life. We ask this through Christ our Lord in unity with You and the Holy Ghost, one God, world without end.
Amen.

In the Kandhamal district of Orissa, more churches and 100 homes were destroyed in a fresh wave of anti-Christian violence. In the nearby east Indian city of Ranchi, members of the Oraon tribe, considering Cardinal Telesphore Toppo – a fellow tribe member – the leader of all area Christians, have burned his image in effigy because of an offensive error in a Protestant Bible translation. Also in east India, the Bishop of Jamshedpur conducted a purification rite following the desecration of the Blessed Sacrament. He disputed the police’s contention that the desecration was an act of theft rather than anti-Christian violence. UCA News noted that ‘Church people would have dismissed it as a case of theft had money in the donation box been taken.’ Instead, ‘they took only holy things used on the altar,’ the bishop said.

I was asked to review A Civilization of Love by Carl Anderson. Given my schedule it has taken some time to read the book and gather my thoughts. As a fellow knight, I was quite eager to read what the Supreme Knight of the Knights of Columbus had to say, but as a busy father I had little time to pull together my review.

The goal of the book is to extend the teachings of the Church, particularly as articulated by John Paul II, into the world we live in; the very fabric of our world, our culture, or lives. The book touches on culture, the dignity of every person, abortion, marriage, divorce, poverty, business ethics, demographic changes, immigration, and globalization. In each area it clearly brings forward the teachings of Christ and the Church and how they apply to the hear and now; how we are called to live the gospel in our everyday lives.

The book is clearly targeted at everyday Catholics who may know their faith, but who do not understand how that faith connects with their daily lives. While Carl Anderson is clearly an extremely intelligent and well educated individual, he has written this book in a clearly accessible style. This book requires no special education, and would be easily read by the typical adult.

The book is written with an optimism that stems from faith. There is a clear belief permeating the book that the world can be transformed, that we can make a difference if we act in faith. This book is no doom and gloom, but holds out the hope of the gospel. At times I wondered if this hope was overly optimistic given the apparent difficulties we face, but I think the book provides the right picture. We may not succeed in the short run, but we must hope and we must act in our lives.

At the end of each chapter there is a set of questions that asks the reader how they are living the gospel message in the area covered or provides a challenge to do more in this area. This addition may be useful to the Catholic who is struggling to implement his or her faith in all areas of their lives. For these everyday Catholics, the questions will likely be useful in challenging self-perceptions and complacency.

The book aims to bridge Church teaching and real world action. I recommend it to anyone who wants a basic understanding of how to live our faith in all areas of our lives. This would also be good for non-Catholics who want to understand at a basic level why Catholics take the positions that they do in cultural, political, and world affairs. Finally, I recommend this to anyone involved with the Knights of Columbus or interested in becoming a knight, because it gives an insight into how a knight should view the world.

Bishop Jaime Soto is a compassionate and faithful bishop. He recently gave a speech National Association of Catholic Diocesan Lesbian and Gay Ministries. Unfortunately, it was not well received by the group with at least five people in the audience walking out.

Our bishops and clergy should know that it bolsters the faithful and strengthens the Church when they speak the truth with the kind of compassion that Bishop Soto does. Praise God for Bishop Soto. Sacramento has a good one coming.

You can read the entire speech at California Catholic. In this speech, the bishop defends marriage and speaks against abortion, contraception, and the sin of same gender sexual activity, with the third as a particular temptation to homosexuals. He also mentions the Church’s support of Proposition 8 in California that will undo the license for homosexual marriage granted by a single vote in the California Supreme Court. It surely must be a difficult thing to speak the truth to those who least want to hear it.

Here we sit in what looks like tough times. Indeed they may be very tough. What should we do at a time like this. Repent? Of course. But more than that we need to praise God and thank him, for all he has done and all he will do. For the Lord remembers his people. Much good can come from adversity - let us remember that as we face it with faith. Always praise and exalt the Lord - no matter what the market or the economy or the government ever does.

If your looking for a good prayers to help you through the troubled time, the ones below seems the surest pick of all. Of course the emphases are mine - but they do seem appropriate.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who tresspass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. AMEN!

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, end ever shall be, world without end. AMEN!

Hey tech companies! Remember outsourcing your tech support to Bangalore, India? Guess what, it looks like Christian’s aren’t so welcome there. The Indian attacks on Christians have now hit the countries high tech region. Still there is no help from the various Indian governments. Silence also prevails in the American press.

Bangalore: Catholics condemn government after church desecration

More than 3,000 stunned Catholics gathered in sorrow at St. James church at Marianapalaya, a Bangalore suburb, on Sunday after the church was found desecrated.

Eighteen locks of the church had been broken by the intruders who entered in the early morning hours, broke into the tabernacle, and scattered the Sacred Species around the sanctuary. The vandals also threw vestments and other articles around the sacristy.

“This is an attempt to terrify our people,” Father Joseph Menezes, the vicar of the parish, which numbers about 5,000 Catholics, told CWN. “See what they have done. It has been done by people who know what hurts our people (Catholics) most,” said Father Menezes pointing to the tabernacle.

As the news of the desecration spread, shocked Catholics assembled around the church, voicing their outrage at the Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) governing the Indian state. Hundreds of police officers around the church were kept busy controlling the protest, with dozens of reporters recording the events.

The desecration of the church came exactly a week after a dozen churches of different denominations were attacked in and around Mangalore, along the west coast of the state. Hindu fundamentalist groups even held a press conference to claim responsibility for that campaign of religious violence.

Shockingly, the BJP chief minister of Karnataka chose not to take action against the Hindu groups, and went so far as to rationalize the attacks as a response to the allegations that Christians were seeking to convert Hindus. Since the government issued that reaction, 15 more churches have been desecrated in different parts of the state.

We still are hearing nothing in the western media about the atrocities going on in India. Apparently Hindu extremists get a free pass, especially if their government backs them. Where is the outcry at this injustice?

Orissa archbishop stays put in Delhi after death threats

The letter stated that the archbishop, who has been staying in Bhubaneswar for three decades and whose house was stoned a couple of days ago, would be killed if he returned to Orissa.

‘They (Hindu groups) threatened to kill me. Is this how civilised society behaves?’ he asked.

According to Cheenath, his representations to state authorites about how poor tribal families have been under attack have fallen on deaf ears.

‘I simply don’t have faith in the state government which has failed to protect the lives of Christians in Kandhamal and Sambalpur districts. Most of them are poor and now they are refugees.’

Cheenath rejected allegations that Christians were engaged in converting tribals in Orissa.

‘There is no truth in this. The VHP and Bajrang Dal are twisting facts,’ he said.

This is the third of a three part series. The first part (Names Part I: The Illogic Of The Term Pro-Choice) discussed the term “choice” as used by abortion proponents. The second part (Names Part II: What Do You Mean By Progress?) discussed the illogic of the term progress or progressive when used to promote political movement in the wrong direction. Here, we discuss the term progressive but as applied to members of the Church rather than secular society.

When we look at the term progressive as applied to those in the Catholic Church (as in a “progressive” Catholic or a “progressive” parish), it is even more clear that the term is inappropriate in the extreme. We believe that the Church was founded by Christ and is guided by the Holy Spirit, particularly through the three pillars of sacred scripture, sacred tradition, and the magisterium or teaching authority of the Church. For the believer, these are held as truth. This is an Amen point not up for discussion among Catholics.

When the Church teaches something infallibly, Catholics hold this to be true. But “progressive” Catholics reject what is held as infallible. For example, we have those advocating women priests even though it is counter to the infallible teaching of the Church. There are those who want to argue for abortion even though it is counter to the infallible teaching of the Church. There are those who want to say homosexual behavior is not sinful, even though it is counter to the infallible teaching of the Church. There are those who question the real presence of the Eucharist, even though it is counter to the infallible teaching of the Church. Others want to allow divorce, even though it is counter to the infallible teachings of the Church.

If someone is moving away from the truth, it is not progress. Something that increases our separation from truth is a delusion, it is destructive, it serves evil. A person calling themselves Catholic who advocates against the truths taught by the Church is NOT progressive. Proper labels might include: dissident, heretic, misguided, deluded, or wrongheaded. Our true progress comes in remaining faithful and advancing our relationship with Christ and His Church. It comes from preaching the good news and sharing truth with those around us - not from fighting that very truth.

Those who remain faithful to the Church should avoid using the term progressive in speaking of these dissidents. It appears to legitimize an illegitimate position. It paints a pretty veneer over an ugly problem. Even though a dissident by any other name is still a dissident, calling him otherwise can confuse the ignorant.

This is part two of a three part post. Follow the link to Part I: Illogic of the term “pro-choice”.

Last time I discussed the illogic of the term choice as applied to one of the favorite “progressive” causes - abortion. The combination of this cause with the very concept of progress is itself an oxymoron. What exactly does the left mean by “progress” and “progressive”?

The term “progressive” is a loaded term used to evoke an automatic positive response. After all, who is against progress? Remember the Back to the Future film, where in both 1955 and 1985 the mayors both promised “progress?” Progress is one of those things that seems good when we encounter it in everyday life. I want progress in my career. I want my team to progress to the play-offs. I want to see progress on the goals I have set. I would like progress in the fight against cancer. Progress in these instances means improvement. I think I would be less thrilled if we said that the Iranians had made progress in developing nuclear weapons; or if a person’s cancer had progressed to the next stage. Progress in these latter cases is, as the Germans might say, nicht so gut. We can see from this that the idea of “progress” depends entirely upon your reference points - where you start and what is the expected end.

When someone says they are progressive, a thinking person should ask from where and to where are they progressing? If they are moving somewhere objectively worse than where they started, then the term progressive is used as a deception. This seems to be the case of left wing activists who label themselves progressive. They want change, but it is not clear that the change is at all positive. In fact, their moves are more akin to spreading cancer than to improving society. Consider the end state to which they want to move: gay marriage, abortion on demand, socialized medicine, faith excluded from public, restriction of speech rights, increased taxation, bigger government, less freedom.

So when someone tells you they are progressive, ask yourself what they mean. Find out where they are headed. Chances are, it isn’t progress their peddling but something much more nefarious.

Some words are extremely loaded. Take for example the word “choice” and the so-called “pro-choice” group. Being pro-choice is one of those things that seem positive as far as words go. I mean, who could be against choice? I like to choose where I live. I like to choose chocolate over vanilla. I like to choose who my friends are. I like that I chose my spouse. Yep, I guess when it comes down to choosing in and of itself, I am for choices.

In contrast, people should not be able to choose to rape other people. People should not sell others into slavery. People should not murder other people. People should not abort babies. In all of these things, it is not a matter of “choice” but a matter of basic human rights.

Because most of our lives are spent dealing with choices that do not violate the human rights of others, we tend to think that choice is a blanket good thing. This glossing over details with a label that sounds positive hides the fact that the “pro-choice” is about the license to murder innocent human life in violation of their fundamental human right to life. Those who want to defend this practice, use words that sanitize what they really mean.

Catholic Culture : Fears mount for India’s Christians as violence spreads

Hindu-Christian tension mounted in the southwestern Indian state of Karnataka, where 14 churches were attacked on Sunday. UCA News’s T. S. Thomas reports, ‘Police drove around 500 protesting Catholics inside a church and locked them in from outside … In another incident, police entered a church and beat Catholics praying for atonement for church desecration.’ On Monday evening, a church was attacked in the southwestern state of Kerala, the area of India evangelized by St. Thomas the Apostle. India, which has fewer than 20 million Catholics – the US has nearly 70 million – has more seminarians than any other nation in the world and more seminarians than all of North America and Central America combined. Within India, Kerala produces the greatest number of seminarians. In Orissa, where recent anti-Christian violence began, 25,000 Catholics are still hiding in the forest. At the request of the Italian foreign minister, the persecution of Christians in Orissa will be discussed at the Sept. 29-30 summit meeting between EU member nations and India.

Again we here nothing from the secular press. A modern day persecution is going on and the West simply turns a deaf ear. What are you doing about it? Are you spreading the news? Are you praying for our brothers and sisters in harms way? Christians are being beaten, murdered, and raped for the simple fact that they are Christians. And while the Indian government pays lip service to ending the violence, we find the police joining in on the persecution.

While campaigning in public for a speedy withdrawal of US troops from Iraq, Sen. Barack Obama has tried in private to persuade Iraqi leaders to delay an agreement on a draw-down of the American military presence.

I am at a loss for understanding what is going on with this. Here are some alternatives.

Perhaps he doesn’t think the troops should leave and he lied to the American people.

Perhaps he does believe they should leave but thinks waiting will bring them home sooner. The hard part with this second choice is that when you read the NY Post article, you can see that waiting will almost certainly result in a prolonged presence in the troop level. For this to be true he would have to have been speaking out of turn without having thought things through. That is possible, but frightening. Here he is trying to influence foreign policy without understanding the ramifications.

Perhaps he cares more about having a talking point for his campaign; something to rally the protesters about. That would be a rather machiavalian move. Hardly the kind of change we want.

So far, I don’t see a good answer here for Obama. He was either ignorant and spoke without thought (not typical of the candidate), or he lied, or his is manipulating the lives of real Americans against what he believes is their best interest for his own political gain.

Joe Biden and American Charity

Looking at the ten-year total of Biden’s giving, one percent would have been $24,500. One half of one percent would have been $12,250. One quarter of one percent would have been $6,125. And one eighth of one percent would have been $3,062 — just below what Biden actually contributed.

As a Christian I firmly believe that it is the sacred responsibility of each and every person singly and jointly as a community to care for the poor within the community and poor around the globe. We are called, each one of us to give sacrificially to others. As Christians, we all agree that this is true; one can hardly deny it. Yet where the rubber meets the road too many shirk that sacred call. Based on his tax records, Joe Biden appears to be one of these.

A recent study has shown that those who identify themselves as conservative give more of their own money to charity than do those identified as liberal. This in spite of the fact that liberal families make 6% more than conservative families. What is more those that identify as conservative are more likely to give blood. Those that claim compassion, particularly for the poor, are less likely, as a group, to actually put their money where their mouths are.

Senator Biden clearly demonstrates this principle but how about his running mate? Prior to 2005 (i.e, before he started planning a run at the White House) Obama had a salary close to Senator Biden. From 2000 to 2004, a 5 year period, Obama reported income north of $1.2 million but donated about $10,800 - about 0.8% - well below the national average of 2%.

When I am confronted with that question - “what am I to do for those in need” I do not typically end up answering that I would spend other peoples money to solve the problem. I think that answer misses the entire point of Christian charity. The question is one that is directed at each and every one of us. What will I do, me, myself? How will I care for my brother? What about you? Do you give from the heart? Do you sacraficially give of your time talent and treasure? Or do you leave it to a faceles and godless beuracracy to do it for you? I hope your answer is better than what senators Biden and Obama appear to offer.

Click here for a larger image

I was speaking with a friend last night about the reasons why we do things. He made the point that we are called to do all things in the Lord. He pointed out that in doing so it sometimes seems as if we are motivated simply to store up rewards in heaven or to avoid hell, and these motives seem, well, less than they should be. I know what he is saying, but I think things are not so simple. Let me use a couple examples from family life to explain what I mean.

Look at it from a parent-child perspective. I ask my children to do certain things for a variety of reasons. They may obey only because they want to avoid punishment or receive a reward. They may obey because they understand and agree with my request or because they love me and know that I love them. As a parent, I would prefer the latter two reasons, but if I cannot have these, obedience solely to avoid punishment or to seek reward is acceptable. Sometimes that is all that they can give.

What about in a mature relationship? I sometimes do things so that my wife is not displeased. Too much time at the computer or reading one of my books instead of being with the family can make a spouse understandably unhappy. No one likes it when someone is angry with them - in fact it can be rather unpleasant. Avoiding this, especially with someone so important to me, motivates me. Is this the same motivation as turning off the computer because I would rather spend time with the family I love? No, they are not. The latter is a much better motive. But the first motive is still valid - and sometimes that is all I can give.

Here is what I conclude from this. Is it better to obey because we love God? Yes. Is it better to obey because we understand and take his command as our own law? Yes. Is it alright if all we have is obedience to gain reward or avoid punishment? Indeed it is. However we each need to grow beyond this if our relationship with God is to mature beyond that of a child. Though even in a mature relationship, sometimes these “lesser” motives have their place.

Many issues are at stake

Some are more important
Than others

No issue can be ignored

But none are more crucial
to the foundation of our country than…
Life
And family

The family
Must be strengthened

Human life is paramount
And must be protect
From conception to natural death

Catholics have been integral to the success of America
A new generation must stand for truth

In expressing his admiration for Govenor Palin, Barack Obama admitted that he is not up to the job.

“I’ve got two [kids] and they tire Michelle and me out,” he [Obama] said. ref

I think he is implying one of two things. Is he saying that he would abort all of the others because he couldn’t handle it? Or is it that he couldn’t possibly be qualified for president because he has all he can handle right now? I find this a very worrying trend. That brings up an the question of whether his children are adequately cared for now. If he is tired out merely from raising two children, I can’t imagine how neglected they are when he is on such a demanding campaign stump. Clearly a woman like Governor Palin has time to be a good mother and a public servant, clearly putting to shame poor tired old Barack Obama who can’t handle his two.

There is a third alternative, but I certainly hope that he was not implying that women with more than two children should be excluded from public service. That would be sexist.

Regardless of exactly what he meant, it is certainly clear that Obama is not up to the task of running a country the size of the United States if he can barely handle heading a household of four. Barak Obama is woefully inadequate and he all but admits that here.

In case you don’t know about this story, a woman was accused, convicted, and now sentenced for killing her month old baby in a microwave. Note the judges description.

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — A woman was sentenced Monday to life in prison without the chance for parole for burning her baby daughter to death in a microwave after fighting with her boyfriend. Common Pleas Judge Mary Wiseman lashed out at 28-year-old China Arnold….

“No adjectives exist to adequately describe this heinous atrocity,”Wiseman said. “This act is shocking and utterly abhorrent for a civilized society.”

I think the judge is exactly right. But how does this differ from the late term abortions that Democrat candidate Obama supports? A month? It isn’t burning, because we know that abortionists inject saline to burn the babies in the womb. They also jam things into their skulls and rip off their limbs. So what is the difference? How does candidate Obama defend this? Defending it isn’t above his pay grade, because he and his wife have defended it for some time.

Is it possible that the senator from Illinois is simply OK with the heinous, the utterly abhorrent?

I think this is indeed the case. Candidate Obama has argued against the partial birth abortion ban. The senator’s wife, in a fund raising letter for her husband, said that partial birth abortion was “a legitimate medical procedure.” This is the procedure where the abortionist sucks the brains out of a child in the birth canal or shoves scissors into their skull or decapitates them at the neck.

The senator voted against the protection of infants born alive after an abortion and is the only person in the Illinois senate to actively speak against this act. In Illinois, babies born alive after an abortion were left to die. The babies would suffocates because their lungs were not fully developed. This excruciating process could take hours before resulting in the infants death. These infants, discarded by their parents would be put out of the way without ant medical treatment until they died. Presidential candidate Obama thinks this is a valid activity our society and defended this evil. For Obama, nothing is more important than a woman’s right to kill her child. Nothing.

In fact, candidate Obama has said that the “the first thing I’d do as president” would be to sign the Freedom of Choice Act, which would overturn every local, state, and federal abortion law passed in the past 35 years. Come on in abortionists, bring your hooks and your scissors and your vacuums and your saline. Have a place to toss the live births you didn’t want, because president death will be in the White House if candidate Obama is elected. He would finally win his fight to destroy the lives of children in as gruesome a manner as that of one month old Paris Talley described in the story above. What is the difference? Just one month.

Killing the most defenseless members of our society is a heinous and utterly abhorrent act. Candidate Obama disagrees. He wants to defend the legality of suffocating innocent life for hours. He defends the legality of abortionists sucking the brains out of infants in the process of being born. Perhaps the only thing as abhorrent as the evil act of infanticide are those that have the unmitigated gall to defend and advocate it.
